Healthcare preparation for visitors and tourists

Prepare emergency contacts, identity, travel insurance, payment and a safe hospital route for a visit to China.

Practical preparation Source-linked next steps

A visitor may not have local hospital accounts, familiar payment tools or an established clinician. Keep the plan simple, source-led and available offline.

01

Save emergency and location information

Call 120 first for a perceived medical emergency in mainland China. Keep the accommodation name, full address, building or gate and a reachable telephone number available in Chinese. For advance planning, verify the exact emergency campus; an urgent or after-hours label does not establish a 24-hour emergency department, and staff control triage on arrival.

02

Use an official provider route

Choose the exact hospital campus and department using government or provider evidence. An international label does not guarantee every service, language or insurer arrangement.

03

Prepare to pay, claim and leave lawfully

Confirm the travel insurer's assistance and authorization process, while keeping the hospital's payment request separate from the payer's coverage decision. Ask for official receipts and emergency records, confirm any pending report and use the hospital's remote route if something is missing after departure. If care overlaps the end of a visa or visa-free stay, contact 12367 or the local exit-entry authority before expiry.

04

Keep a verified death and repatriation contact chain

Save the travel insurer's assistance number, the visitor's embassy or consulate and an authorized family contact. If a visitor dies, start from the place and circumstances of death and do not assume the hotel, tour operator, insurer or consulate can replace the Chinese medical, police, funeral-home, exit-entry, Customs or carrier process.

05

Track any unresolved result, record or payment

Ask the exact hospital, payment provider and insurer for separate written statuses. Keep identity and authority documents secure, especially after leaving China. If a provider's registration appears uncertain, verify official records and submit facts to the competent local authority rather than making a public accusation.

06

Prepare the full inpatient handoff

If admission or scheduled surgery is possible, confirm the exact campus, bed and registration status, define companion and language roles, keep deposits and insurer decisions traceable, and identify every discharge document and follow-up route. The hospital remains responsible for clinical preparation, consent, transfusion and discharge decisions.

07

Prepare a portable dental-care route

Verify the exact stomatological hospital, general-hospital department or filed clinic; confirm passport registration and language support; obtain a provider-issued plan and component-level quote; and keep images, material or device identifiers, charges, receipts and follow-up records portable. A website cannot choose a treatment, material or urgency route.

08

Prepare a portable eye-care route

Verify the exact eye hospital, general-hospital ophthalmology department, medical fitting service or optical seller; confirm passport registration and language support; keep examination and prescription records separate from product orders; and preserve reports, images, product identifiers, itemized charges and follow-up ownership. A website cannot interpret findings, classify urgency or choose a test, lens, medicine, procedure or provider.

09

Prepare a child’s verified healthcare route

Identify the legal pediatric provider and exact campus, keep the child’s identity separate from the adult account and payment record, confirm guardian or representative documents for each task, and preserve vaccination, consent, prescription, charge and follow-up records. A website cannot assess a child, choose treatment or decide whether it is safe to wait; call 120 for a perceived medical emergency in mainland China.

10

Plan a traceable diagnostic-service handoff

Use the diagnostic center to distinguish a hospital service from an independent center, a routine check-up from a diagnostic order, and a signed report from images, data or pathology material. Confirm the legal provider, exact campus, identity match, price and authorization route, collection format and clinician-led follow-up; the guides do not decide which test is needed or interpret a result.

11

Verify China's live entry-health route for the actual journey

Use current Customs and destination-authority information for the exact origin, transit and travel dates. A foreign vaccination record, domestic electronic certificate or ICVP may serve different purposes, and no general guide can guarantee that a border or carrier will accept one document.

12

Do not use an online channel as emergency triage

A visitor may encounter passport, phone-number, payment, location and prior-record barriers, and an online clinician may stop the encounter and require physical care. For a perceived emergency in mainland China call 120; for routine administration, verify the legal institution and know the exact offline campus before paying.

13

Keep emergency response outside routine mental-health booking

A visitor may face passport, language, payment and prior-record barriers at a routine service. For a perceived medical emergency call 120, and for an immediate safety or police emergency call 110; use 12356 for psychological assistance without treating it as ambulance dispatch or a guaranteed English service.

14

Use routine gynecology channels only for routine administration

A visitor may face passport, language, payment and record barriers, and a booking desk cannot assess symptoms or urgency. For a perceived medical emergency in mainland China call 120; otherwise verify the exact legal institution, campus, department and likely payment documents before travelling.
