Mental health & psychiatric care

Psychiatrist, psychologist or counsellor in China?

Verify the institution, professional role and permitted scope behind an English title before treating it as diagnosis, psychotherapy or consultation.

English-language listings in China may use psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist, psychotherapist, counsellor, psychological consultant or coach without explaining the person's registered profession, employer or legal service setting. China's Mental Health Law assigns different boundaries to psychiatric diagnosis and treatment, psychotherapy and psychological consultation. This guide helps foreign patients verify those administrative facts before booking. It does not decide which professional a person clinically needs, assess symptoms or risk, rank qualifications, endorse a provider, interpret a degree or certificate, diagnose a condition, recommend therapy or medicine, or determine whether a person should change or stop existing care.

Use this as a practical starting point

Provider procedures can change, so confirm time-sensitive details with the hospital, insurer or service. A licensed professional must make clinical decisions for an individual patient.

Key points

  • Treat every English professional title as a starting label that must be matched to a Chinese role, institution and service.
  • Psychiatric diagnosis and treatment belong to qualified medical professionals working through lawful medical institutions.
  • Psychological consultation, psychotherapy and psychiatric diagnosis are not interchangeable activities under the Mental Health Law.
  • Verify a medical institution and a named physician through separate official routes, then reconfirm the current appointment with the institution.
  • For a non-physician service, ask who employs the person, where the service occurs, what it is called in Chinese and what professional record it creates.
  • A degree, association membership, platform badge, overseas certificate or English biography is not by itself proof of a China medical licence or permitted local service.
  • Compare communication, privacy, records, fees, cancellation and onward-referral arrangements without treating price or seniority as a quality guarantee.
  • Leave diagnosis, treatment selection, urgency, medicine and individual professional suitability to qualified local clinical services.
01

Translate the title into a role map, not a clinical choice

Start by recording the exact English title, Chinese title, legal employing entity, service location and description of the work. Ask whether the encounter is psychiatric diagnosis and treatment, psychological consultation, psychotherapy, a school or workplace support service, coaching or another non-medical service. Similar marketing language can conceal different legal and professional roles. This classification is needed before comparing licences, records, prices or complaint routes.

Do not use the title map to decide what kind of care a person needs. The 2020 diagnosis and treatment standards are clinical material for qualified professionals, not a self-selection tool. A receptionist, search engine, friend or website may help identify department labels but cannot determine whether a person needs psychiatric assessment, psychotherapy, counselling, another specialty or urgent public assistance.

  • English and Chinese professional title
  • Employer or contracting legal entity
  • Medical institution or non-medical setting
  • Named service in Chinese
  • Record, receipt and complaint owner

Translate the role for verification. Do not translate it into a diagnosis, urgency judgment or treatment recommendation.

02

Understand what makes psychiatry a medical route

A psychiatrist is a physician in a medical route. Verify the medical institution's Chinese legal name and available practice-licence information, then verify the doctor's Chinese name and available physician registration separately. Confirm with the institution that the person is assigned to the appointment and that the exact campus operates the relevant department. The institution and physician queries provide identity evidence but do not establish quality, experience, language ability, current schedule or clinical fit.

Psychiatric diagnosis, treatment, prescription and medical records are controlled medical activities. A successful appointment does not guarantee a diagnosis, prescription, certificate, admission, test, medicine or follow-up plan. National prescription rules keep the clinical decision with the prescriber and pharmacist-controlled dispensing route. Do not ask a non-medical service to confirm a diagnosis, change medicine or issue a document that only a responsible medical institution can create.

  • Licensed medical institution
  • Registered physician identity
  • Current department and campus
  • Medical record holder
  • Prescription and pharmacy route when clinically applicable
03

Separate psychological consultation from psychotherapy

The Mental Health Law states that psychological consultation personnel must not engage in psychotherapy or the diagnosis or treatment of mental disorders and should recommend medical-institution care when a possible mental disorder is identified. It also places psychotherapy within medical institutions and limits people specialising in psychotherapy from diagnosing mental disorders or prescribing. These boundaries make the actual service and setting more important than a translated title.

Ask a psychological consultant or psychotherapist to state the Chinese role, institution, professional basis, scope of service, supervision or management structure, note-taking practice and referral process. Do not infer a national medical licence from the word psychologist, a university degree, an overseas certificate or membership badge. This site cannot adjudicate whether an individual credential is valid or sufficient; the employing institution and competent authority should answer role-specific questions.

The word therapist does not by itself prove psychotherapy inside a medical institution, and the word psychologist does not by itself prove physician registration.

04

Verify the provider through the correct official route

For a medical service, use the national institution query and physician query, then verify the current appointment through the institution's own official channel. Resolve material differences in Chinese names, addresses, campus, department or employing entity before sharing sensitive information or payment. A missing search result can reflect spelling or data presentation, so ask the provider and local health authority rather than publishing an allegation based on one search.

For a non-medical service, identify the registered business or institutional entity, contract party, physical or online service address, named individual, privacy terms, cancellation terms and complaint contact. The national medical registries cannot validate a person who is not represented as a physician or a business that is not a medical institution. Equally, ordinary business registration would not turn consultation into medical diagnosis or treatment. Keep the applicable evidence and limits clear.

  • Chinese legal entity name
  • Current physical or online service location
  • Institution licence and physician registration where applicable
  • Contract and payment recipient
  • Privacy, records, referral and complaint contact
05

Compare access facts without creating a ranking

Ask each verified provider the same practical questions: accepted identity, age or guardian restrictions, language used during the encounter, interpreter policy, appointment length, current charge basis, cancellation process, what notes or medical records are created, who can request them and what happens when the service cannot continue. National mental-health price guidance organises medical service items for local implementation but does not set one national fee or make a non-medical counselling package equivalent to a medical service.

Do not rank professionals by price, hospital grade, academic title, online reviews, nationality, marketing claims or session length. These facts may help a patient verify logistics but cannot predict quality, therapeutic relationship, suitability or outcome. Ask the responsible institution how it handles professional assignment, substitutions, referrals and complaints, and preserve the dated answer.

  • Accepted identity and age route
  • Language and interpreter arrangement
  • Medical record or non-medical service note
  • Price item, package terms and receipt
  • Cancellation, substitution and onward-referral process
06

Respond to role mismatches through safe channels

Pause before payment or disclosure when a provider refuses to identify the legal entity, claims a medical diagnosis without a medical-institution route, promises a prescription outside lawful care, uses a personal payment account in place of the stated institution, or cannot explain records and complaints. Preserve the advertisement, profile, Chinese names, messages, payment request and date, then verify through the institution or competent authority. Do not publicly diagnose wrongdoing from an unresolved credential search.

For a medical institution's service or staff-identity concern, use its published complaint office. For a contract or non-medical service issue, identify the authority or dispute route applicable to that entity rather than assuming the medical complaint system covers it. None of these routes decides what care a person clinically needs. For perceived need for public emergency assistance, use 120 or 110 as appropriate rather than waiting for a provider-verification dispute to be resolved.

Avoidable problems

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the English word psychologist proves a physician or nationally licensed medical role.
  • Treating counsellor, psychotherapist and psychiatrist as interchangeable.
  • Checking only a person's biography and not the employing entity or service setting.
  • Treating an overseas certificate or association badge as automatic China practice authority.
  • Using a registry match as a quality ranking or treatment recommendation.
  • Asking a non-medical service to diagnose, prescribe or alter treatment.
  • Assuming a premium price or famous hospital name guarantees suitability or outcome.
  • Ignoring who owns the notes, medical record, contract and complaint route.
  • Publishing an allegation because one spelling did not appear in a search result.
  • Delaying clinical or public emergency contact while investigating credentials.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is a psychologist in China always a doctor?

No assumption is safe from the English title alone. Ask for the Chinese role, employing entity and service setting. If the person is represented as a physician, check the medical institution and physician registration separately and confirm the current appointment with the institution.

Can a psychological counsellor diagnose a mental disorder?

China's Mental Health Law separates psychological consultation from diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. Psychological consultation personnel must not conduct that medical diagnosis or treatment and should recommend an appropriate medical-institution route when indicated under the law.

Can a psychotherapist prescribe medicine?

No. Prescription is a physician-controlled medical activity followed by pharmacist review and dispensing. The Mental Health Law also limits people specialising in psychotherapy from diagnosing mental disorders or prescribing.

Does the physician registry tell me who is best?

No. It supports an identity and registration check only. It does not rank quality, verify language or current schedule, or decide who is suitable for an individual patient.

How can I verify a counsellor who is not a physician?

Identify the Chinese role, legal employer or contract party, service address, professional basis, privacy and note policy, payment recipient, referral process and complaint contact. Medical registries cannot validate a person who is not represented as a physician.

Should I choose a psychiatrist or counsellor?

This site cannot make that clinical choice. It can help verify each route. Ask a qualified responsible medical service when a clinical assessment is needed, and use public emergency assistance rather than a provider comparison if immediate assistance is believed necessary.
