Yellow-fever vaccination certificates issued in China
Understand the ICVP, its current lifetime-validity rule, how to verify an authorized Chinese center and what to check before an international journey.

The relevant international document is the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP), completed through an authorized issuing route. Under the current World Health Organization rule, a yellow-fever ICVP becomes valid on the tenth day after vaccination and remains valid for the lifetime of the person vaccinated. That certificate rule does not tell an individual whether vaccination is needed or medically appropriate. It also does not create a static country list. Destination requirements, transit conditions and carrier document checks can change, so verify the complete itinerary through the destination and transit authorities and the operating carrier before booking and again before travel. In China, use the official International Travel Health Care Center directory, then verify the exact center, branch and appointment category through provider-controlled information. Do not assume that an ordinary hospital, community vaccination clinic or residence-exam appointment can issue an ICVP. Do not substitute a domestic adult vaccination credential, a child's vaccination certificate, a local electronic vaccination certificate or an International Travel Health Examination Certificate. This guide explains document identity, timing and administrative checks only. It does not recommend yellow-fever vaccination, assess eligibility, contraindications or prior doses, promise that a center offers the service or has stock, prescribe a material or photo list, quote fees or issue times, guarantee language support or certify that any border, transit authority or carrier will accept an individual document.
Use this as a practical starting point
Provider procedures can change, so confirm time-sensitive details with the hospital, insurer or service. A licensed professional must make clinical decisions for an individual patient.

Key points
- The relevant international document is the ICVP, not a domestic vaccination screenshot or residence health-exam certificate.
- A yellow-fever ICVP becomes valid on the tenth day after vaccination and remains valid for the vaccinated person's lifetime.
- The validity rule does not decide whether a traveller needs vaccination or is clinically eligible.
- Check destination, transit and carrier requirements for the exact itinerary and date.
- Use the official center directory and confirm the exact Chinese branch and appointment category.
- Do not assume that a hospital or community vaccination clinic is authorized to issue an ICVP.
- Check identity, vaccination, issuer and validation fields before leaving the issuing center.
- Certificate issue never guarantees boarding, entry, transit or acceptance by another organization.
Identify the ICVP by document purpose
The ICVP follows the international model in the World Health Organization's International Health Regulations. Its role is to record a vaccination or prophylaxis through an authorized route using the prescribed certificate structure. The issuing authority and completed fields matter; a similar-looking clinic letter or translated vaccination card is not automatically the same document.
Keep the ICVP separate from four common look-alikes: an adult domestic vaccination credential, a child's vaccination certificate, a city electronic vaccination certificate and an International Travel Health Examination Certificate or residence medical-exam result. Those documents may be valid for their own systems, but none should be relabelled as an ICVP.
Use only the current validity rule
For yellow fever, the ICVP becomes valid on the tenth day after vaccination. Once valid, it remains valid for the lifetime of the person vaccinated. WHO states that the lifetime rule applies to certificates regardless of when they were issued. Preserve the original rather than replacing a sound certificate merely because it is older.
Validity under the international rule and practical acceptance are different questions. A wrong name, incomplete entry, altered page, missing issuer validation or inability to link the holder to the document can still require issuer review. A border or carrier may also inspect itinerary-specific requirements. Do not hand-correct an entry or laminate, detach or alter pages without first asking the issuing center what it permits.
Current rule: validity begins on the tenth day after vaccination and continues for life. This is a certificate rule, not individual medical advice.
Verify the whole itinerary, not only the final destination
Create a route sheet listing every destination and transit point, the dates, whether the traveller passes border control, the operating carrier and any later overland crossing. Check the current official destination and transit authority pages and the operating carrier's document rules. Save the page, URL and check date so a coordinator can see which itinerary was assessed.
The revised Chinese frontier health law and Customs service guide authorize risk-based inspection and identify Customs as an authority at Chinese ports, but neither source imposes one yellow-fever document on every traveller. WHO defines the certificate framework but is not a substitute for current itinerary rules. Recheck after a route, carrier or travel date changes and shortly before departure.
Find an authorized Chinese service route
Start with the official International Travel Health Care Center directory, choose the regional center and follow its provider-controlled channel. Ask whether the selected branch handles yellow-fever appointments and ICVP issuance for the traveller's circumstances. A center listing establishes affiliation, not service availability at every branch.
Local official pages demonstrate why confirmation is necessary. Shanghai publishes an ICVP service guide, Beijing publishes its own outbound vaccination and record-transcription route, and Qinghai separates yellow-fever work from other travel-health tasks. None of those local instructions proves another center's booking system, materials, photographs, fees, stock, timing or language support.
Ask administrative questions before the appointment
Tell the center the exact itinerary and ask for the correct appointment type, branch and accepted identity-document route. Ask which originals, itinerary pages, prior records, translations, forms or photographs it requires and how payment and collection work. Use only the answer for that center and service; do not combine checklists from different cities.
Questions about whether vaccination should be administered, whether a past dose is medically sufficient, whether an exemption is clinically justified or how a condition affects vaccination belong to qualified center staff or another appropriate clinician. This site does not make those judgments, and a booking confirmation is not a clinical decision or a promise of service.
Check the issued certificate as a controlled record
At collection, compare the holder's name and identifying details with the passport and review the vaccination date, product or prophylaxis entry, certificate validity entry, issuer details, signature and official validation fields that are visible. Ask the issuing center to explain an unclear field. Do not add, erase, overwrite or recreate an entry yourself.
Keep the original flat and secure and make a complete color scan. Store the appointment evidence, proof of payment and any provider-issued domestic vaccination record separately. Share only the pages required through the official channel, because a passport-linked health document contains sensitive personal information.
Reconfirm acceptance before departure
Review the route sheet, verify that the tenth day after vaccination has been reached where the certificate is newly issued, and check for schedule or transit changes. Confirm how the operating carrier wants the original presented and whether the destination or transit authority has issued a newer notice. Carry the original in hand luggage when the responsible authority instructs travellers to present it.
A center cannot guarantee another country's admission decision, a carrier's boarding decision or a consulate's document review. If an official questions a field, record the authority, date, contact and precise issue, then contact the issuing center. Do not solve a document problem by purchasing a replacement from an unofficial agent.

Avoidable problems
Common mistakes
- Calling a domestic electronic vaccination record an ICVP.
- Using a residence or work health-examination certificate as vaccination proof.
- Checking only the final destination and omitting transit points.
- Assuming a center directory entry proves service at every branch.
- Copying another city's materials, photo format, fee or timetable.
- Treating an appointment as proof that vaccination or certificate issue will occur.
- Ignoring the tenth-day start of validity for a newly issued certificate.
- Handwriting a correction or editing a scan of the ICVP.
- Assuming lifetime validity guarantees acceptance on every itinerary.
- Giving an agent the original passport-linked certificate without verifying authority.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
When does a yellow-fever ICVP become valid?
Under the current WHO rule, it becomes valid on the tenth day after vaccination. Once valid, it remains valid for the lifetime of the vaccinated person. This describes certificate validity only; it does not decide whether vaccination is required or medically appropriate for an individual.
Does lifetime validity guarantee that every border or airline will accept my certificate?
No. The certificate must still be attributable to the holder and properly completed, and destination, transit and carrier checks remain itinerary-specific. Verify current official requirements before booking and again before departure. An issuing center cannot guarantee another authority's decision.
Can an ordinary Chinese hospital issue the ICVP?
Do not assume so. Use the official International Travel Health Care Center directory and confirm the authorized issuing route for the exact service. An ordinary hospital or community clinic may create a domestic vaccination record, but that record is not automatically an ICVP.
Is my Chinese electronic vaccination certificate enough?
It is a domestic record credential, not automatically the international certificate. Ask the destination, transit authority, carrier or other requester for the exact document name. If an ICVP is requested, verify the authorized center route rather than relabelling or editing the electronic record.
What if my trip departs before the certificate becomes valid?
This site cannot change the validity start or advise an individual vaccination plan. Contact the authorized center and the destination, transit and carrier decision owners immediately with the exact itinerary. Changing a booking or route is a traveller or organizer decision; no outcome or acceptance can be guaranteed.
What should I do if a certificate field is wrong?
Do not overwrite or edit it. Photograph or scan the document as issued, preserve the passport and provider evidence, and contact the issuing center for its correction or replacement process. If travel is imminent, also ask the relevant carrier and border authority how they handle a document under issuer review.
