International-student insurance in China begins with a national school-insurance rule but is operated through the student's own institution and current plan. Article 40 of the national measures requires schools to run an all-international-student insurance system and students to insure themselves under national provisions and school requirements. It does not create one nationwide insurer, price, benefit table, hospital network, direct-payment route or claim file. A useful student record therefore connects the university requirement, accepted enrolment route, issued effective dates, actual policy documents, hospital workflow, open claims and the end of study. Do not copy another university's terms or assume that paying tuition, receiving a scholarship or holding travel insurance proves active student cover.

Use this as a practical starting point

Provider procedures can change, so confirm time-sensitive details with the hospital, insurer or service. A licensed professional must make clinical decisions for an individual patient.

Key points

  • Read the current insurance notice from the university office responsible for your programme, intake and campus; the national rule does not identify your plan.
  • Separate school eligibility, purchase or sponsor action, database synchronization, insurer enrolment and the issued effective date for the individual student.
  • Keep the current certificate, member identifier, policy wording, benefit schedule, hospital rules, assistance route and claim instructions offline.
  • Check the exact hospital, campus, department and care setting against your own plan before non-emergency care; another university's public-hospital rule is not yours.
  • Hospitalization assistance, advance payment, direct billing, patient payment and reimbursement are different states and may involve the school, insurer and hospital separately.
  • Before renewal, leave, transfer or graduation, record the cover end date and preserve every open authorization, invoice and claim through a contact route that will remain usable.
01

Start with your university's current requirement

Identify the university office that owns international-student registration for your exact programme, campus and intake. Ask for the current insurance notice and record whether the school purchases cover, requires the student to use a named route, includes a scheme through a scholarship or fee, or considers an alternative policy. If an alternative may be considered, ask which documents, territory, dates, benefits, language and decision deadline the school requires and obtain the acceptance decision in writing.

Article 40 of the national administrative measures says schools operate an all-international-student insurance system and students must insure themselves according to national provisions and school requirements, with consequences for non-compliance. The rule stops there. SJTU's 2025 notice ties its stated evidence to semester registration and describes a student purchase route, while UNNC says the university purchases its specified CPIC cover during the study period. These different university examples show why the current school instruction—not another campus's website—must identify the operational route.

  • University, campus, programme and intake
  • Degree, exchange, language, visiting or other student status
  • Self-funded, scholarship or institution-funded route
  • School purchase, student purchase or alternative-policy review
  • Required evidence and registration deadline
  • Named university office and written decision

The national rule establishes the school-insurance framework; only the responsible university and current plan can identify what this student must submit and what cover was actually issued.

02

Close the arrival and registration gap

Build a date line from departure through registration: previous cover end, travel or arrival cover where held, arrival in mainland China, university purchase or submission, any school-system update, insurer acceptance, issued start time, renewal and stated end date. Mark every period for which active cover has not been proven. A receipt, tuition payment, scholarship letter or uploaded certificate can be evidence of an action without being the insurer's active member record.

SJTU's 2025 notice is a scoped example: it names a purchase period, warns that a gap between its policy periods can matter and says its university database synchronizes after purchase. Those timing details are not national rules, but they prove that purchase, school visibility and coverage dates can differ. Before travelling, ask the school what it expects during any pre-registration or delayed-enrolment period and whether separate travel or other cover is needed; then verify that separate policy on its own terms.

  • Previous or travel cover end time
  • Arrival and university registration dates
  • Purchase, sponsor or alternative-review submission
  • School-system update status
  • Insurer-issued effective and end dates
  • Any unproven gap and its separate contingency

Never backfill a gap by changing your notes. If cover was not active, preserve the actual dates and ask the responsible organizations what route applies to that expense.

03

Build the actual student plan record

Once enrolled, save the insurance certificate or member schedule, insured name and identifier, insurer and any administrator, group or policy number, effective and end dates, policy wording, benefit schedule, exclusions, hospital or provider rules, authorization and assistance instructions, claim form, document checklist, submission route and privacy or consent process. Record the edition and policy period. Ask the issuer to correct a passport-number, name or date mismatch rather than editing the document yourself.

University pages can point to very different arrangements. SJTU's notice directs students to its stated group-insurance purchase and service route; UNNC identifies a different insurer and says the university purchases cover for its students. Neither page establishes the other's benefits. If the school notice, member certificate and policy wording conflict, keep all three and ask the organization that issued each record to resolve the mismatch in writing before planned care.

  • Certificate, insured identity and member number
  • Insurer, administrator and university sponsor
  • Policy period and geographical scope
  • Benefit schedule, limits, patient shares and exclusions
  • Hospital, authorization and assistance instructions
  • Claim form, evidence list and secure submission route

A university notice locates the scheme; it is not a substitute for the current insurer-issued record and full terms for the individual student.

04

Check the hospital route before non-emergency care

Use the current plan to check the exact hospital legal entity, campus, general, VIP or international department, outpatient, emergency, day-patient or inpatient setting and intended service. Then ask the hospital which identity, payment, deposit and insurance evidence it accepts for that encounter. Keep a provider-accepted backup payment method. For urgent symptoms, obtain appropriate care first and follow the plan's emergency-notification route as soon as reasonably possible; do not delay urgent care solely to complete a website checklist.

Wuchang University of Technology's 2025 guide directs students in its stated arrangement to public hospitals and normal departments, while Zhejiang University's International Campus distinguishes campus clinics for minor problems from off-campus public-hospital care. These are useful examples of school-plan rules, not a nationwide provider list. A private clinic, international department or hospital campus may be clinically suitable but outside one plan's reimbursement route, so separate the healthcare choice from the insurance-payment question.

  • Exact hospital entity, campus and department
  • Outpatient, emergency, day-patient or inpatient setting
  • Plan rule and current assistance answer
  • Hospital registration and finance acceptance
  • Student identity and payment method
  • Backup payment and later claim route

Another university's hospital restriction does not decide your claim. Use it only as a prompt to check the current policy and exact provider before care.

05

Separate hospitalization assistance from payment

For a planned or unplanned admission, open separate records for the hospital's clinical admission, the insurer or assistance case, any advance-payment or guarantee request, hospital receipt and acceptance of that document, the student's deposit or patient share, final discharge settlement and a later claim. Record who contacted whom, the case number, documents requested, scope, validity period and written status. A hotline call or university notification is not itself authorization, a hospital bed or a promise that every charge will be paid.

SJTU's 2025 notice tells students in its arrangement to use the stated service route for hospitalization advance-payment questions. Zhejiang University's International Campus advises students in its specified scheme to contact the responsible international-student-office teacher promptly when hospitalization is needed. These examples show possible school and insurer handoffs, but the actual plan and hospital still control the current case. Ask both sides what remains for the student to pay and obtain the final account before discharge.

  • Clinical admission or proposed treatment record
  • Insurer or assistance case number
  • Advance-payment or authorization request
  • Hospital receipt and acceptance status
  • Deposit and other student-paid amounts
  • Final bill, payer allocation and unresolved items

School informed, insurer contacted, payment assistance approved and hospital accepted are four different statuses. Keep each one in writing where available.

06

Keep a claim file from the first visit

Before leaving the hospital, compare the current insurer checklist with the records actually issued. Common categories can include the official medical-fee invoice or receipt, itemized charges, dated medical record, diagnosis evidence, prescriptions, test reports, admission and discharge record, identity copy, member information, claim form and bank-account evidence. The required originals, language, signature, school stamp, file format and submission method depend on the current arrangement. Keep secure copies and proof of submission without sending medical data to an unverified address or chat account.

Wuchang University of Technology's 2025 guide distinguishes an official invoice from a payment slip and asks for detailed records from every visit under its scheme. UNNC's current page lists original receipts, diagnosis letters, passport and bank-card evidence for its on-campus claim service. The difference is the point: download the live checklist for your own plan, name every missing document, ask the hospital which office can issue it and obtain a case number and written outcome from the payer.

  • Official provider invoice or medical-fee receipt
  • Itemized charge statement
  • Dated visit, diagnosis or discharge record
  • Prescriptions and test reports when required
  • Identity, member and bank evidence
  • Claim form, submission proof and case number

A complete claim file supports assessment; it does not prove coverage or the amount payable. Keep the insurer's requests and final written decision with the provider records.

07

Recheck renewal, leave, transfer and graduation

Before every registration or policy renewal, compare the new school notice, sponsor, insurer, effective dates, member identifier, benefit documents, hospital route and claim instructions with the prior period. Give delayed registration, leave of absence, exchange extension, transfer, withdrawal and graduation their own event dates. Ask which date ends the current school-linked cover and whether any new institution or individual plan requires a separate application. Do not assume that a student card, residence permit, tuition status or old insurance portal proves continued cover.

SJTU's dated notice requires its degree students to renew for registration and warns about policy-period gaps; UNNC describes cover during its students' study period. Those statements are institution-specific, but they support checking cover whenever academic status or policy period changes. Before university email or portal access closes, download permitted records and assign a post-access contact for every open hospitalization, provider invoice, reimbursement claim, correction and refund. Keep the old claim separate from any new plan.

  • New registration and policy-period dates
  • Changed university, programme, funding or student status
  • Current member record and plan documents
  • Written cover end date
  • Open cases and post-access contact route
  • Any replacement plan handled as a new application

Cover ended, an earlier claim remains open and replacement cover became active are separate states. Record each one instead of assuming a seamless transfer.

Avoidable problems

Common mistakes

  • Copying another university's insurer, premium or benefit table
  • Assuming tuition, scholarship or registration payment proves active cover
  • Confusing a purchase receipt with an issued effective date
  • Leaving an arrival or renewal gap unrecorded
  • Using an old card without checking the current policy period
  • Treating every public hospital, campus or department as eligible
  • Assuming a school hotline guarantees admission or payment
  • Discarding payment records below a deductible or before reading the claim checklist
  • Sending passport and medical records through an unverified channel
  • Waiting until graduation or account closure to save an open claim

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is health insurance required for international students in China?

Article 40 of the national administrative measures says schools operate an all-international-student insurance system and students must insure themselves according to relevant national provisions and school requirements. The student's own university must identify the current operational requirement; the rule does not name one national plan or premium.

Can I use insurance from my home country?

There is no universal answer in the national rule. Ask the responsible university whether it considers an alternative policy and what territory, dates, benefits, language and evidence it requires. Obtain the school's written acceptance and still verify the foreign insurer's China hospital and claim route separately.

When does student insurance become active?

Use the effective date and time on the insurer-issued record for the individual student. Application, payment, university database visibility and active cover can be different states. Ask the school and insurer to resolve any mismatch before planned care.

Do all Chinese universities use the same student plan?

No source reviewed establishes one permanent national plan. Current university pages show different sponsors, insurers, purchase routes, claim services and documents. Use your institution's current notice and your own issued policy rather than another school's figures or hotline.

Can I use a private or international hospital department?

Check your current plan and the exact provider, campus, department and care setting. Some university-plan examples restrict reimbursement to specified public-hospital routes, but that wording is not a nationwide healthcare rule. A provider may be clinically available even when a plan will not reimburse it.

Will the university or insurer pay the hospital directly?

Do not assume so. Hospitalization assistance, advance payment, a guarantee, hospital acceptance, a student deposit and later reimbursement are separate steps. Ask the current plan and hospital what has actually been accepted for this admission and what remains patient-paid.

What documents should I keep for a claim?

Start with the current insurer checklist. Common categories include the official invoice or medical-fee receipt, itemized charges, dated medical or discharge record, prescriptions or tests, identity and member evidence, claim form and bank details. Originals, translations, signatures and school stamps vary by arrangement.

What happens to insurance after transfer, withdrawal or graduation?

Ask the university and insurer for the written end date and the post-access route for expenses and claims from the active period. Treat a new university or individual plan as a separate application; it does not automatically continue the old membership or take over an earlier claim.
