Health examinations for work, study and residence in Shanghai

Book Shanghai's official foreigner health exam, prepare the current forms, verify overseas records and use the certificate for work or residence.

Shanghai published an updated foreign-national health-check guide on 14 July 2026, two days before this review. Use that version for the current appointment, document and certificate-collection route. This administrative examination is not a routine voluntary checkup or an occupational-health examination. These are city-specific local instructions and must not be generalized outside Shanghai. It directs applicants to the Shanghai International Travel Healthcare Center at No. 15 Jinbang Road, Changning District, with ordinary weekday-morning examinations, booking at least two weeks ahead through the center's WeChat account, and a customs email route for a new arrival who cannot yet use WeChat. The center's homepage also displays No. 2090 Jinqiao Road, but the updated guide does not direct this work, study and residence examination there; use Jinqiao only when the appointment confirmation specifically says so. The updated document pack is detailed: original passport, copies of the identity page, visa or visa-free entry page and personal-information change pages, three identical recent two-inch photographs, a printed two-page application from My Appointments and a downloaded consent form. Work, study, accompanying-family and other residence purposes have different supporting evidence. An overseas report may be brought for verification if it was completed within six months at an embassy-designated hospital in the country or region concerned, together with original laboratory results and X-ray film. Center review still controls whether supplementation or a new examination is needed. The normal current collection time is three working days, not the four working days shown on an older Shanghai government page. This version difference is important for both applicants and website editors. The current municipal guide does not publish a flat examination price, so this guide does not repeat older university estimates. The downstream process also matters: a Shanghai work permit, a work-type residence permit and a first student residence application are separate files. Some pre-entry work-permit categories allow a health commitment and contain narrow exemptions, while work-type residence guidance generally asks for a Chinese inspection-and-quarantine certificate issued within six months and exempts applicants under 18 and over 70 for that item. Shanghai public-security guidance accepts valid certificates issued by equivalent international travel healthcare centers in other Chinese provinces and cities, and provides limited extension exemptions. This is administrative information, not clinical or immigration advice. The examination center decides examination and verification, the employer manages its work-permit case, the school supplies school documents, and public-security exit-entry administration decides residence permission.

Use this as a practical starting point

Provider procedures can change, so confirm time-sensitive details with the hospital, insurer or service. A licensed professional must make clinical decisions for an individual patient.

01

Start with Shanghai's 14 July 2026 version

The newest city guide is the authoritative operational starting point for this article. It was updated on 14 July 2026 and states that a person planning to live, work or study in Shanghai for one year or more uses the International Travel Healthcare Center route. The exact downstream trigger may be more specific: the work-permit category, work-type residence guide, study-residence process or other residence category can change the age, duration, first-application or exemption rule.

Keep the version date with your checklist. An older official Shanghai page still says in-person lobby reservation and certificate collection after four working days. The current guide instead requires online booking at least two weeks ahead and gives a three-working-day collection target. Use the newer operational details. Retain the older page only as background on verification and re-examination, not as a parallel choice.

Current version boundary: three working days under the Shanghai guide updated 14 July 2026, not the older four-working-day statement.

02

Book through WeChat or the customs assistance email

Search WeChat for the official account 上海国际旅行卫生保健中心, open Services and choose 预约 Booking or Online Booking. The city says to reserve at least two weeks in advance. Complete the applicant identity exactly as shown in the passport and choose the correct purpose. After booking, use My Appointments to retrieve the two-page application form and download the consent form. Save the confirmation but do not share its barcode or passport details publicly.

A new international arrival who cannot yet use WeChat may email shbjzx@customs.gov.cn for appointment assistance. State only what is needed initially: name, passport nationality, requested purpose, contact method and inability to access WeChat, then follow the verified customs reply. Do not send the entire medical report or every passport page in the first message unless instructed through the official channel. The published inquiry hotline is 021-6268-8851.

03

Use Jinbang Road for the standard published route

The current guide directs applicants to Shanghai International Travel Healthcare Center, ground floor of Building 1, No. 15 Jinbang Road, Changning District. Ordinary health examinations are available from 8:00 to 11:00, Monday to Friday. Depending on demand and the day's appointment schedule, extra sessions may be offered on Monday through Thursday afternoons and on Saturdays. An extra-session possibility is not a walk-in promise; the appointment controls.

The center homepage also displays No. 2090 Jinqiao Road. Because the updated city guide does not assign this foreign-national work, study and residence route to Jinqiao, do not choose it from a map search or an old school handbook. Attend Jinqiao only if the center's current confirmation explicitly names it. A separate 2026 Bund green-channel announcement may help eligible foreign professionals, but the article publishes no open booking conditions; confirm through the employer or Bund service center.

04

Prepare the current Shanghai identity and form set

Carry the original valid passport or travel document and one copy set of the photograph or identity page, the current visa page or page showing visa-free entry, and every page recording a change to personal information. If a new passport has replaced the entry document, bring the old identity page and the official linkage or replacement records as well. Use one consistent Roman-letter name, passport number and date of birth across the booking and forms.

Bring three identical two-inch colour photographs taken within the previous six months, showing the full face without headwear. From My Appointments, print the two-page Health Examination Application Form and download, print and complete the Consent Form. Read before signing. A university's form, an employer template or a foreign clinic's summary does not replace these center forms. Carry a pen and retain a scan of the completed administrative pages without posting the signed consent publicly.

05

Add the supporting evidence for the actual purpose

For a work-residence purpose, the current guide accepts the employment certificate issued by the relevant local foreign-experts authority, a copy of the employer's business licence, or the original and copy of the applicant's Foreigner's Work Permit. Ask the employer which evidence matches the live case. The work permit and residence permit remain different approvals, so a document uploaded to one system does not automatically complete the other.

For study residence, bring the original and a copy of the student card or admission letter. Accompanying family members bring the published employer-business-licence copy or other relevant supporting evidence for the person they accompany. For family visit, property purchase, medical treatment, marriage, return for permanent settlement or another residence purpose, the guide identifies the temporary-residence registration, property certificate or other purpose-specific evidence. Do not copy the employee list into a student file.

06

Bring the complete overseas examination file

The current guide says an applicant with an overseas health report should bring the original for reference where the examination was completed within the preceding six months at an embassy-designated hospital in the country or region concerned. Bring the original laboratory results and X-ray film as well. The older official center-derived page also emphasizes the complete original report set. A scan, translated summary or physician letter alone may not let the center verify all required fields.

Ask the center before travel whether it needs the standardized Physical Examination Record for Foreigner, how the overseas hospital designation is shown, and what language or authentication applies. If formalisation of a qualifying public document is requested, the issuing country may use an apostille or a non-member legalisation path. An apostille does not replace medical review. Preserve every original, seal and image; do not write corrections on the foreign form after the hospital issues it.

07

Treat verification as review, not automatic conversion

An older Shanghai official page says a qualifying overseas record within six months needs physical verification, but the current guide more carefully says to bring the report for reference and directs applicants to the overseas-infectious-disease-surveillance verification route. The safe interpretation is that the center reviews the report and determines whether the evidence is complete. Do not promise that no blood draw, imaging or other supplemental item will be needed.

If an abnormality or incomplete item requires re-examination, the center contacts the applicant and issues a notice. Attend the designated department within the stated period with the original valid identity document and the health-examination fee invoice. Follow the named item rather than purchasing an unrelated private test. A normal appointment estimate no longer applies while a required re-examination or document clarification remains open.

08

Follow the five-hour preparation rule

The current Shanghai guide says not to eat for five hours before the health check; drinking water is allowed. This differs from Beijing's published eight-hour instruction, so do not use one city's fasting rule in the other. The official Shanghai consent form describes a package that may include internal and surgical clinical checks, ear-nose-throat examination, X-ray, ECG, ultrasound and blood tests for hepatitis B surface antigen, hepatitis C antibody, HIV antibody and syphilis, with other authority-required items possible.

The form's list is an administrative description, not a reason to self-diagnose or stop treatment. Contact the center before the appointment about pregnancy, acute illness, disability accommodations, necessary medicine or an inability to complete an item. Do not conceal a relevant safety fact, and do not let an employer or school give clinical instructions. The center and responsible health professionals control examination preparation and alternatives.

09

Confirm the fee instead of repeating an old estimate

The Shanghai guide updated 14 July 2026 does not publish one flat examination or verification price. Its consent form states that the applicant agrees to pay the applicable cost, and the re-examination instruction refers to the health-examination fee invoice. Confirm the current charge during booking or with the center, ask which items are included and request an itemised invoice after payment. Supplemental items can change the total.

Some official university pages still display approximate historical amounts such as around 500 yuan or a verification range. Those pages label their information as reference and defer to the center; they are not current municipal fee schedules. This guide therefore does not present those amounts as the 2026 price. Do not quote an agency package, another city amount or a residence-permit application fee as the health-examination fee.

10

Use the current three-working-day collection route

Under the 14 July 2026 guide, collect the health certificate three working days after the examination at Window 2 of the center's Public Service Center. Bring the original valid identity document and the certificate-collection receipt. Alternatively, apply in person for courier service after the examination; delivery is scheduled three working days after the examination. Verify the delivery address, telephone and named recipient before leaving.

For the security and privacy of the result, any change to the collection method must be made in person at Window 2. The older city page says four working days, but the current version says three. Neither is a guarantee when re-examination remains. On receipt, check the name, passport number, birth date, examination and issue dates and certificate type. Do not open a sealed or privacy-marked package in front of an employer or school unless the official workflow requires it.

11

Apply the six-month certificate rule to the correct filing

Shanghai public-security guidance says the center's health certificate is valid for six months and accepts certificates issued by international travel healthcare centers in other Chinese provinces and cities. Count from the issue date to the intended receiving-authority submission, not merely to the examination appointment. If the certificate is approaching expiry, ask whether the file must be formally accepted before the six-month date and leave time for any requested reissue or new examination.

For residence-permit extension, the same public-security answer exempts a person who already holds a valid residence permit and also exempts renewal within three months after expiry; a lapse of more than three months requires a new health certificate. This limited extension rule does not make an expired certificate valid for a new work permit, a first study-residence case or another application. Keep the old permit, expiry date and official filing receipt to support the exemption.

12

Route the result through the Shanghai work-permit case

Shanghai's 22 January 2026 overview says a foreign national applies for the Foreigner's Work Permit within 15 days after entry and includes the physical-examination certificate in the file. The employer normally manages the online and on-site workflow. Give the employer the certificate version required by the official system and retain a copy and submission evidence. Do not let the original disappear into an untracked courier or personal HR inbox.

Some category-specific pre-entry guides allow a health-commitment letter and some identify narrow exemptions. The April 2026 Category C graduate guide is one example, but its rules apply only to the described graduates and circumstances. A commitment is not the final certificate, and a graduate exemption should not be extended to another employee category. Open the live service guide for the applicant's exact A, B, C or special route before deciding what to upload.

13

Keep work permit and work residence permission separate

Shanghai's work-type residence guide asks for a Chinese entry-exit inspection and quarantine health certificate issued within six months, together with the original passport and visa, application form and photograph, employer letter and work-permit evidence. It exempts applicants under 18 and over 70 from that health-certificate item. The exit-entry hotline published for detailed questions is 021-12367.

Completing the work permit does not itself create residence permission. If the visa states that residence permission must be obtained after entry, the general Shanghai guide says to apply within 30 days. Conversely, a health certificate does not approve employment or extend lawful stay. Build a timeline with entry date, work-permit deadline, certificate collection, accommodation registration and residence filing, and escalate immediately if an appointment or re-examination threatens a legal deadline.

14

Use the school as document coordinator, not health authority

Fudan University's undated reference page illustrates the student workflow: an X1 or first residence applicant obtains the health examination or verification through the Shanghai International Travel Healthcare Center, while the university supplies the admission notice, JW201 or JW202 and Introduction Letter for Visa. For an expired residence document, current Shanghai public-security guidance controls: renewal within three months after expiry is exempt from the health-certificate item, while a lapse beyond three months requires a new certificate. The university repeatedly says its operational details are reference only and the competent authorities control.

A school may arrange a group appointment or collect a certificate for its visa-support process, but it does not decide whether an overseas report passes verification. Ask whether the school wants the issued certificate, a copy or a status confirmation, and who is authorized to receive it. Avoid sending complete laboratory and imaging originals to a teacher, admissions mailbox or dormitory desk unless the documented process specifically requires those records.

15

Use the Bund green channel only after eligibility confirmation

Shanghai announced in May 2026 that the Bund Service Center for International Professionals, on the seventh floor at 100 South Zhongshan Road, has a dedicated green channel for entry medical examinations through cooperation with the health center. This may help foreign professionals whose employer or district talent service confirms access. It is a facilitation service, not a separate certificate issuer.

The announcement does not publish public booking, eligibility, document or examination-location rules. Do not arrive without confirmation or replace the Jinbang Road appointment based on the news article. Ask the employer or Bund center whether the service is available to the named applicant, how it connects to the center, what records to bring and whether the same three-working-day certificate route applies.

16

Correct errors through the issuing center

Check the certificate against the passport as soon as it is received. If the name order, spelling, passport number, nationality, date of birth or other administrative field is wrong, do not use correction fluid, annotate the original or ask an employer or school to overwrite it. Contact the Shanghai International Travel Healthcare Center with the original identity document, certificate, collection receipt and invoice and request the center's controlled correction or reissue process.

The current public pages do not promise an online correction function or a fixed correction time. If the passport was replaced between examination and filing, keep the old and new identity pages and replacement evidence and ask both the center and receiving authority how to link them. A health-certificate correction does not automatically update the work-permit, school or public-security record. Submit the corrected version through each affected system and keep acknowledgements.

17

Protect the report, certificate and courier trail

Shanghai's consent form says the examination results involve personal privacy and should be opened personally and kept safely. The current guide requires an in-person request to change the collection method for the same reason. Use a private address or an authorized employer or school recipient only after confirming who will receive the envelope. Keep the courier receipt and do not photograph an opened report in a group chat.

Medical and health information is sensitive personal information under national law. Give each recipient only what its identified process requires. Ask whether the issued certificate is sufficient before sharing the foreign hospital report, HIV or syphilis results, X-ray film or complete application form. Employers and universities should restrict access to the permit or student-service personnel handling the case, document onward transmission and delete unnecessary working copies under their lawful retention process.

Avoidable problems

Common mistakes

  • Using the older four-working-day Shanghai collection statement.
  • Assuming both Jinbang Road and Jinqiao Road handle the same booked service.
  • Waiting until the 30-day residence deadline to seek an appointment.
  • Forgetting the printed application and consent forms from My Appointments.
  • Bringing an overseas summary without original laboratory results or X-ray material.
  • Assuming a six-month-old report guarantees verification without supplementation.
  • Repeating an old university fee estimate as the current center price.
  • Applying a Category C graduate exemption to every foreign employee.
  • Treating the work permit and work-type residence permit as one approval.
  • Treating a school introduction letter as the health certificate.
  • Sending full laboratory results to an unnecessary employer or school recipient.
  • Hand-editing an error on the issued certificate.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I book the Shanghai foreigner health examination?

Use the WeChat official account 上海国际旅行卫生保健中心 and choose its booking function. The city guide updated 14 July 2026 says to book at least two weeks ahead. A new arrival who cannot yet use WeChat may request assistance at shbjzx@customs.gov.cn. Keep the confirmed appointment and attend the named site; an email request or screenshot of an available slot is not itself confirmation.

Which Shanghai International Travel Healthcare Center address should I use?

For the standard route in the current city guide, use the ground floor of Building 1 at No. 15 Jinbang Road, Changning District. The center homepage also shows No. 2090 Jinqiao Road, but the updated guide does not assign this service there. Follow Jinqiao only if your current appointment confirmation expressly names it. The Bund green channel likewise requires separate eligibility confirmation.

What documents should I bring to the Shanghai health exam?

Bring the original passport, copies of the identity page, visa or visa-free entry page and information-change pages, three identical recent two-inch photos, the printed two-page application from My Appointments and the consent form. Add the supporting evidence for work, study, accompanying family or the other residence purpose. The downstream permit office may have a separate document list.

Can Shanghai verify a physical examination completed overseas?

Bring the original report if completed within six months at an embassy-designated hospital in the relevant country or region, together with original laboratory results and X-ray film. The center reviews the file and may request supplementation or re-examination. A recent date, translation or apostille does not guarantee medical acceptance. Confirm country-specific formalisation and hospital-designation evidence before travelling.

How long must I fast before the Shanghai examination?

The current Shanghai guide says five hours without food, while plain water is allowed. Do not import Beijing's eight-hour instruction. Contact the center about necessary medicine, pregnancy, acute illness or another patient-specific issue rather than changing care on an employer's or website's advice.

How much is the Shanghai work or residence health examination?

The municipal guide updated 14 July 2026 does not publish a flat price. Confirm the current charge with the official appointment route, ask which items are included and keep the itemised invoice. Older university pages display approximate historical figures but defer to the center, so they should not be represented as the current official price. Supplemental examination may change the total.

When will the Shanghai health certificate be ready?

The current guide says three working days after the examination for in-person collection at Window 2 with original ID and the collection receipt, or for courier delivery arranged in person after the exam. An older official page still says four days; use the 14 July 2026 update. Re-examination or incomplete verification can extend the timeline.

How long is a Shanghai health certificate valid?

Shanghai public-security guidance states six months. It also accepts certificates issued by equivalent international travel healthcare centers elsewhere in China for the residence route. A current residence-permit extension, or renewal within three months after expiry, may be exempt; a lapse beyond three months requires a new certificate. Do not transfer that exemption to a new work-permit or another application.

Can I use a health commitment for the Shanghai work permit?

Some category-specific pre-entry routes allow one, including the cited Category C graduate guide. It is a temporary pre-entry document and not the final inspection-and-quarantine certificate. After arrival, follow the exact work-permit category and original-verification steps. Do not apply one graduate exemption or valid-residence exception to every foreign employee.

Does my Shanghai university decide whether my overseas report passes?

No. The university supplies and checks school-side documents and may coordinate an appointment, while the Shanghai International Travel Healthcare Center decides examination or verification and public-security exit-entry administration decides residence permission. Fudan's page expressly labels its operational details as reference. Ask the school which certificate copy it needs, but do not treat its old price or timing as center policy.
