Health examinations for work, study and residence in Guangzhou
Use Guangzhou's authorized route, prepare the correct records, and keep the examination separate from work-permit, school and residence approvals.

A Guangzhou administrative health examination is not a routine checkup, an occupational-health examination or one universal step for every foreign national. These are city-specific local instructions and must not be generalized outside Guangzhou. Start with the receiving process: a Foreigner's Work Permit application, an employer's post-entry file, an X1 student's school and residence sequence, or a public-security request for a residence document valid for one year or longer. Then book the service and location confirmed by Guangzhou International Travel Health Care Center. Current official and university sources commonly point work and study applicants to No. 207 Longkou West Road, but the official directory also lists Shamian and a separate outbound-visa medical site, so the appointment confirmation must control. The examination institution issues or verifies the health document; the employer, school, work-permit authority and exit-entry authority keep separate files and make separate decisions.
Use this as a practical starting point
Provider procedures can change, so confirm time-sensitive details with the hospital, insurer or service. A licensed professional must make clinical decisions for an individual patient.

Key points
- Identify the exact recipient and application stage before booking: work-permit notification, post-entry work permit, school intake and study residence, and public-security residence are separate files.
- For a residence document valid for one year or longer, the current national regulation requires the applicable health certificate and gives it a six-month validity period from issue.
- Guangzhou work-permit guidance also uses a six-month health-document window; a pre-entry commitment can move the local certificate to the post-entry stage but does not remove it.
- Use the official Guangzhou center appointment route and let the confirmation specify the service, date and site; do not assume every address in the institution directory performs every examination.
- No. 207 Longkou West Road is the location repeatedly named in Guangzhou work-permit and student sources, while the separate outbound-visa medical site at No. 59 Huali Road, Zhujiang New Town serves a different purpose.
- Carry the passport and current application evidence plus the exact copies, photographs and forms shown in the current appointment; dated school checklists are useful preparation aids, not universal center rules.
- An overseas report is not automatically exchangeable for a Guangzhou certificate. Bring the original form and supporting laboratory and imaging records and let the authorized center decide verification, supplementation or repeat items.
- Conditional national fee-relief rules exist for specified first-entry workers, students and overseas-record verification, but proof and covered standard items must be confirmed; extra items can remain self-paid.
- No current official 2026 Guangzhou package total was located. A 2024 center schedule is itemized, and adding its lines does not produce a reliable universal price.
- A 2023 SYSU guide estimated four to five working days for its Guangzhou students, but the examination receipt and current collection instruction—not a website estimate—control.
- A health certificate or examination receipt does not itself issue a work permit, authorize employment, complete school registration or grant a residence document.
- A school's internal submission deadline can be earlier than the immigration deadline; save appointment, examination, collection and submission evidence and alert each recipient before its clock expires.
- Treat the passport, examination form, laboratory results and certificate as sensitive records and share only what the verified recipient needs through an official channel.
1. Name the recipient before you name the examination
Write one line at the top of the file: “Recipient — document — deadline — city.” The recipient might be the Guangzhou work-permit authority, an employer preparing that submission, a university international-student office or the Guangzhou public-security exit-entry authority. Ask for the exact name of the health document it expects and whether it wants the issued certificate, an overseas-record verification result or temporarily an examination-acceptance receipt.
Do not merge the steps. The health center controls examination and verification; a school controls its admission and internal submission file; the science and technology authority controls the work-permit file; public security controls visa and residence decisions. Approval or a receipt in one system is evidence for another system only where that recipient says so.
- Record the application type and intended duration.
- Ask whether this is a first application, post-entry completion, extension, transfer or correction.
- Save the recipient's official instruction, date and contact channel.
- Ask which original document must ultimately be submitted and whether a scan is acceptable for an interim step.
Do not book an ordinary hospital checkup because an agent calls it a “physical.” Ask the receiving authority whether it requires the authorized entry-exit health route.
2. Check the legal and administrative clocks
The current national regulation says a foreign national applying for a residence document valid for one year or longer submits the applicable health certificate and that the certificate is valid for six months from issue. A person whose visa states that residence formalities must be completed also has a post-entry immigration clock. Those are different clocks: the certificate can still be medically current while a visa or school deadline is close, and an early school deadline does not change the certificate's national validity rule.
Guangzhou schools may impose their own intake sequence. Jinan University's 2025 guide, for example, separates temporary-accommodation registration, the Guangdong foreigner digital-photo receipt, the center appointment, health certificate or acceptance receipt, school papers and the later residence application. South China Normal University's July 2026 guide tells its X1 students to provide materials on an earlier school timetable. Use those only for the named school.
- Visa or authorized-stay expiry
- Date by which residence formalities must be filed
- Employer or work-permit submission date
- School registration and internal document date
- Examination appointment and expected collection date
- Six-month health-certificate acceptance window
3. Book Guangzhou's authorized route and confirm the site
The official directory identifies Guangzhou International Travel Health Care Center, also described as the Guangzhou Customs Port Outpatient Department, as the responsible institution. It lists entry-exit examination locations at No. 207 Longkou West Road in Tianhe and No. 33 Shamian North Street in Liwan, plus a separate visa-medical location used for outbound visa examinations. Guangzhou work-permit material and recent university guides repeatedly point work and study applicants to Longkou West Road.
Recent official university guides direct students to the Guangzhou center's official WeChat appointment account. The center website was displaying a system-maintenance notice during this review, so do not infer that an unavailable web page means walk-in service. Use the official account or a current center instruction, capture the confirmation and read the named location, applicant category, arrival window and preparation rules before travel.
- Institution: Guangzhou International Travel Health Care Center
- Frequently cited work/study site: No. 207 Longkou West Road, Tianhe District
- Other directory site: No. 33 Shamian North Street, Liwan District
- Separate outbound-visa medical site: do not select it merely because the word “visa” appears in your case
- Final authority: the current appointment confirmation
The directory gives institution locations and general hours, not a guarantee that a particular examination can be completed at either site without the correct booking.
4. Follow the Guangzhou work-permit sequence
Guangzhou's 2022 work-permit answer says that, where health proof was not already submitted at the pre-entry stage, the post-entry work-permit file includes a certificate issued within the preceding six months by a Chinese inspection-and-quarantine institution. The city's 2020 FAQ explains the alternative pre-entry route: a certificate from an overseas medical institution recognized by a Chinese inspection-and-quarantine institution, with the relevant list potentially published on the local Chinese embassy or consulate website, or a commitment where such a route is unavailable, followed after entry by the Chinese certificate.
Ask the employer or authorized work-permit operator which stage is open in the system and which document is missing. A screenshot of a booked examination, a general hospital report or an employer's promise is not the issued certificate. Conversely, do not repeat an examination solely because a generic checklist says so if the Guangzhou work-permit authority has already accepted a qualifying document in the current case.
- Save the pre-entry notification submission and any health-document commitment.
- Confirm whether an overseas institution was on the recognized route used by the relevant Chinese mission.
- If the health document was deferred, obtain the Guangzhou certificate after entry within the authority's filing sequence.
- Keep work-permit system acceptance separate from the later work-type residence application.
5. Follow the school and study-residence sequence
An X1 visa generally corresponds to study longer than 180 days, while X2 is a short-term study category. Do not convert that distinction into a claim that every X1 or every student has the same examination checklist. The school may first check the admission notice, JW form, accommodation registration and passport record, then route the student to the center and later issue or upload its own residence-supporting papers.
For SYSU's Guangzhou students, a 2023 guide listed the admission notice and JW form, passport and copies of the identity, latest-visa and latest-entry-stamp pages, and three 40-by-32-millimetre photos. Jinan University's 2025 sequence referred to a health certificate or examination-acceptance receipt at one school step. These are useful examples, but another school and the center can require a different current set; ask both rather than substituting one school's list.
- Admission notice and school enrollment evidence
- JW form where issued and requested
- Passport, current visa and latest-entry record
- Accommodation-registration record where requested
- School-specific appointment or introduction evidence
- Current health-center photograph and form requirements
- School's internal submission and public-security filing dates
An examination-acceptance receipt can be an interim school document only where that school says so. It is not the final health certificate or a residence document.
6. Build one identity-matched document pack
Use the passport that the current application is based on. Compare the Roman-letter name order, date of birth, sex marker where recorded, nationality and passport number across the appointment, school or employer submission, overseas record and current visa. If the passport was renewed, ask every recipient how the old and new numbers must be linked before the examination document is issued.
Bring originals and the copies named in the appointment. The 2023 SYSU Guangzhou guide used three recent 40-by-32-millimetre colour photos, while older online lists use different counts and labels. That conflict is exactly why this guide does not publish one universal 2026 photo rule. Follow the current center confirmation and keep spare compliant photos only as a practical backup.
- Original passport used for the application
- Copies of the biographical page, current visa and latest entry stamp or record where requested
- Appointment confirmation
- Employer/work-permit or school/admission documents for the named route
- Current required photographs
- Overseas original form and all supporting reports, if seeking verification
- Old passport or official linkage evidence if the passport changed
- A secure method to pay any confirmed self-paid amount
7. Present an overseas examination as a verification request
Bring the original Foreigner Physical Examination Record or other form the receiving route accepts, not only a cropped scan. Include the original laboratory results, imaging or radiology report, examining physician's signature and the medical institution's stamp or seal where those items appear on the form. Preserve the issue and test dates. Ask the Guangzhou center to identify in writing which items it can verify and which must be supplemented or repeated.
For the work-permit route, Guangzhou's official guidance refers to a document issued within six months by an overseas medical institution recognized by a Chinese inspection-and-quarantine institution; the relevant list may be published on the local Chinese embassy or consulate website. Recognition for that administrative file does not force the health center or public-security authority to accept an incomplete record. A translated summary can help navigation, but it should not replace or alter the original values, units, signatures or institution marks.
- Original examination form
- All attached laboratory reports
- Imaging report and other named supporting results
- Physician signature and institution seal or stamp
- Passport identity matching the report
- Issue dates within the recipient's acceptance window
- Recognition evidence if the work-permit route asks for it
- Written list of missing or repeat items from the center
Verification is an institutional decision. A complete-looking foreign report, notarization or translation does not guarantee that Guangzhou will exchange it without supplementary items.
8. Use only the center's current preparation instructions
The examination includes medical procedures controlled by the center. Read the appointment instruction for fasting, food, drink, clothing, arrival time and any other preparation; do not copy instructions from another city, an old school page or a voluntary checkup package. Do not stop or change prescribed medicine merely to follow a generic internet checklist—ask the treating clinician and the examination center how it should be handled.
At check-in, tell the clinical staff about any matter relevant to safe examination procedures, including possible pregnancy, implanted devices, mobility or communication needs, and follow their instructions. This site cannot decide whether an item is safe, medically appropriate, waivable or acceptable to the administrative recipient.
- Read the full current appointment message.
- Arrive within the confirmed window rather than relying only on directory hours.
- Request language assistance for consent, history or clinical instructions if needed.
- Keep the receipt and confirm the exact document name and collection method before leaving.
9. Confirm fees without inventing a package total
The official center published an itemized medical-service price schedule effective in September 2024, but it does not state one total for every foreign worker, student or residence applicant. Different cases can involve a full examination, overseas-record verification, missing items, extra recipient-requested items, vaccination or another service. This guide therefore does not add schedule lines together or quote an old school estimate as a 2026 price.
The national international-travel-health portal describes conditional charge suspension for specified first-entry workers and students and for qualifying overseas-record verification for people intending to settle, work or study for one year or longer. Bring the visa, admission or work evidence named by the center and ask what is covered before payment. Missing proof and items outside the standard certificate can be self-paid, and local implementation must be confirmed.
- Ask whether the case is full examination, verification, supplementation or another service.
- Ask which proof is required for any charge-relief assessment.
- Request the current amount and accepted payment method from the official appointment or cashier.
- Keep an itemized receipt and do not confuse examination fees with later residence-document fees.
10. Collect, inspect and protect the issued record
A 2023 SYSU guide estimated four to five working days for its Guangzhou student route. Treat that only as planning history. The center's receipt should state or lead to the current collection date, method and document. Before leaving the counter or accepting a digital record, compare the name, passport number, date of birth, examination date, certificate date and institution mark with the application file.
Do not write over, crop, retouch or privately translate fields on the issued document. If something is wrong, ask the issuing center for its correction route and retain the original, receipt and any written explanation. Store a secure scan, but confirm whether the recipient needs the original, a center-verifiable electronic record or a copy.
- Collection date and method
- Exact issued document title
- Identity-field check
- Issue date and six-month acceptance window
- Institution mark, verification code or other authenticity feature
- Original-submission and return arrangements
- Secure scan and submission receipt
11. Hand the right record to each authority
For a work case, ask the employer to confirm upload or acceptance in the work-permit file, then separately prepare the work-type residence application. For a study case, meet the school's internal step, obtain its supporting documents and separately complete the exit-entry application. Guangzhou Public Security's online appointment service is for foreigner visa and residence matters; it does not book the health examination.
A valid health certificate proves only what the issuing and receiving rules assign to it. It does not prove that the work permit was issued, make employment lawful before authorization, extend a visa, complete accommodation registration, enroll a student or guarantee a one-year residence document. Save a dated acceptance or submission record from every system.
- Health-center examination or verification record
- Employer and work-permit submission record
- School intake and supporting-letter record
- Accommodation-registration record where applicable
- Exit-entry appointment and application receipt
- Final work-permit and residence-document decisions
12. Resolve a supplement, correction or deadline risk
First classify the problem. A missing test or unverifiable overseas item goes back to the health center; a spelling or passport-number error goes to the issuing center and may also require the employer or school to update its system; an expired document goes to the receiving authority for a fresh-document decision; a visa or residence deadline belongs with public security. Ask for written instructions and a new date rather than relying on a phone summary alone.
If a deadline may be missed, notify the employer or school and the competent authority before expiry, attach the appointment or examination receipt and ask what lawful interim route is available. Neither illness, an examination appointment nor a pending report automatically extends authorized stay or permits work. For immigration routing, use Guangzhou Public Security or the national 12367 service rather than an unverified agent.
- Record the problem and the office that identified it.
- Preserve the original certificate, overseas record and all receipts.
- Obtain the center's list of supplementary or repeat items.
- Request formal correction of identity fields; never alter the document yourself.
- Alert every recipient whose deadline or stored identity may be affected.
- Keep proof of the corrected document and resubmission.
13. Share sensitive data by the minimum-necessary route
A passport page, examination form, laboratory result and health certificate can reveal sensitive identity and medical information. Use the center's official account, the employer or school's verified system and the government platform named for the application. Check the recipient address and file before upload, and avoid sending an unrestricted report link or full document set through a group chat.
Ask whether the recipient needs the certificate, a verification page or the full underlying report. Where a shorter document satisfies the named purpose, do not volunteer unrelated findings. Keep a log of what was sent, to whom, for which application and on what date, and remove temporary shared copies when they are no longer needed under the recipient's process.
Minimum-necessary sharing is a privacy safeguard, not a way to withhold a document the competent authority lawfully requires. Ask the verified recipient to clarify its purpose and secure channel.
14. Keep the Guangzhou boundary visible
This guide was compiled from the listed sources on 16 July 2026 for Guangzhou. The center directory has no visible update date; the detailed work-permit sources are from 2020 and 2022; the student examples range from 2023 to July 2026; and the itemized fee schedule took effect in 2024. Their dates and scopes are deliberately stated so an older checklist is not presented as a live universal rule.
Do not import Shenzhen's current 18-to-70 work-residence health-certificate wording, its Huanggang or Heping Road locations, its transfer FAQ or its photograph rules into a Guangzhou application. Likewise, do not export SYSU, Jinan University or SCNU's internal timetable to every Guangzhou school. When a current booking or authority instruction conflicts with a dated guide, preserve the new instruction and follow the competent Guangzhou recipient.

Avoidable problems
Common mistakes
- Booking a voluntary hospital checkup instead of the authorized Guangzhou entry-exit health route
- Choosing the separate outbound-visa medical site because the application also involves a visa
- Assuming every service is available at both Longkou West Road and Shamian without reading the appointment
- Treating a 2023 university photograph list as the universal 2026 center rule
- Submitting only a scan or translation of an overseas report without the original supporting results
- Assuming an overseas institution or notarization guarantees Guangzhou verification
- Quoting an old school estimate or adding a 2024 itemized schedule into a supposed current package fee
- Treating conditional national charge relief as an automatic free examination
- Using the examination receipt as though it were the final certificate or residence approval
- Waiting for the report before warning a school, employer or public-security authority about an expiring deadline
- Assuming the six-month certificate window extends the visa or application deadline
- Editing a name, passport number, date or image on the certificate instead of using the issuer's correction route
- Sending the full report and passport through an unverified agent or group chat
- Copying Shenzhen's age, location, transfer or renewal rules into a Guangzhou file
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Where do foreigners complete a work, study or residence health examination in Guangzhou?
Use the service and site named in the current appointment from Guangzhou International Travel Health Care Center. Current official work-permit and university sources repeatedly point relevant applicants to No. 207 Longkou West Road, Tianhe District, while the official directory also lists Shamian and a separate outbound-visa medical site. Do not choose from the directory without confirming the service.
How do I book the Guangzhou examination?
Recent official university guides direct students to the Guangzhou center's official WeChat appointment account. Because the center website was under system maintenance during this review, use the current official channel named by the center, school or employer and retain the booking confirmation. A Guangzhou Public Security visa/residence appointment is a different booking.
What documents and photos should I take?
Take the original passport, the current appointment, the identity/visa/entry copies and employer or school documents named for your route, plus any original overseas record. A 2023 SYSU guide used three 40-by-32-millimetre photos for its Guangzhou students, but that dated school list is not a universal 2026 rule. Follow the appointment's current photo count, size and background.
Can Guangzhou accept a physical examination completed abroad?
Possibly, but not automatically. Guangzhou work-permit guidance refers to a document issued within six months by an overseas medical institution recognized by a Chinese inspection-and-quarantine institution; the relevant list may be published on the local Chinese embassy or consulate website. The authorized center or receiving authority can still require original supporting results, verification, missing items or repeat items. Bring the complete original set and ask for a written decision.
Is the Guangzhou health examination free?
Do not assume so. A national 2017 policy still published on the official portal describes conditional charge suspension for specified first-entry workers, students and qualifying overseas-record verification, subject to proof and standard-item limits. Extra items or applicants without the required proof may be self-paid. Ask the center to assess the current case.
How much does the Guangzhou examination cost in 2026?
No current official universal 2026 package total was located. The center has an official itemized schedule effective in September 2024, but different routes and supplementary items differ, and its lines should not be added into an invented package. Ask the current official booking or cashier for the amount and keep the itemized receipt.
How long does the Guangzhou report take?
A 2023 SYSU guide estimated four to five working days for its students. That is not a current service guarantee. Use the collection date and method on the examination receipt, allow time for supplementation or correction and alert the employer or school if its deadline is at risk.
How long is the health certificate valid?
For the national residence rule and Guangzhou work-permit sources reviewed here, the relevant health document is within a six-month window. Count from the issued date and ask the specific recipient whether it will still accept the document on submission. This does not extend the visa, stay, school or employer deadline.
Does the health certificate complete my Guangzhou work permit or residence permit?
No. It is one supporting document. The employer and work-permit authority complete the work file, the school completes its file, and Guangzhou Public Security decides visa and residence matters. An examination receipt, certificate or validated overseas record does not itself authorize work or residence.
Can my school use the examination receipt while the certificate is pending?
Only if that school expressly accepts it for a named interim step. Jinan University's 2025 guide describes such a sequence for its students, but another school or public-security authority may require the final certificate. Keep the receipt and ask the named recipient in writing.
What if the report has the wrong name or passport number?
Do not edit it. Contact the issuing center with the original document, receipt, current passport and any old-passport linkage evidence, request its formal correction route, and tell the employer, school and other systems that stored the incorrect identity. Keep the corrected-document and resubmission records.
Should I give my employer or school the complete medical report?
Ask which document is necessary for the named application and use its verified secure channel. A certificate or verification page may be sufficient in some processes; another authority may lawfully request more. Do not broadcast the full report or passport, and keep a record of the purpose, recipient and date of each disclosure.
