Health examinations for work, study and residence in Beijing
Book Beijing's official foreigner health exam, prepare work or study evidence, verify overseas records and route the certificate to the right authority.

The primary local Beijing route described here for a foreign national who needs a health examination or overseas-record verification for work, study or residence is the General Administration of Customs (Beijing) International Travel Health Care Center; the receiving authority may accept another expressly qualifying Chinese inspection-and-quarantine certificate. It is not the same as a voluntary employer check-up, a routine health check at a hospital, an occupational-health examination or a visa medical required by another country. These Beijing appointment, document and no-resubmission details are city-specific local instructions and must not be generalized outside Beijing. Start with the receiving process: the Foreigner's Work Permit, an employment residence permit, a first study residence permit or another named application. That process determines whether a certificate is required, its six-month timing and whether a certificate already submitted to one Beijing authority needs to be submitted again. The center's ordinary intake population is a foreign national applying to settle in China or to hold a post, work or study for one year or more, but downstream Beijing routes contain more specific age, first-application and permit-duration rules. Book before treating a general statement as a personal conclusion. As of 16 July 2026, appointments are available through the national customs international-travel-healthcare WeChat service account or the Beijing center website. A 30 June notice warns that the site is being upgraded during July and August and may be unavailable outside working hours, so preserve the successful appointment SMS and use the official telephone or WeChat route if the site is down. The Hepingli and Haidian locations have different hours, and Haidian has a separate afternoon window for overseas-record verification. Bring the original passport, the exact photo format and the work or study evidence for the route selected. An overseas examination is not automatically accepted because it was recent: Beijing publishes detailed rules for the form, language, hospital seal, physician signature, conclusion, original X-ray, ECG, ultrasound and laboratory results. Missing or unclear items can produce supplemental examination, and an invalid form can require a new examination. Normal certificate collection is after the fourth working day, but a verification or medical follow-up can take longer. This guide is administrative information, not medical advice, immigration advice or a guarantee of acceptance. The center, work-permit authority, school and public-security exit-entry administration each make decisions within separate roles.
Use this as a practical starting point
Provider procedures can change, so confirm time-sensitive details with the hospital, insurer or service. A licensed professional must make clinical decisions for an individual patient.

Key points
- Start from the exact Beijing work, study or residence application, not from a generic health-check package.
- Use the Beijing Customs international travel health care center or another route expressly accepted by the receiving authority.
- During the July-August 2026 website upgrade, use the official WeChat account when the website is unavailable.
- Keep the appointment SMS; an expired appointment must be booked again.
- Hepingli and Haidian have different service hours, and Haidian publishes afternoon overseas-verification hours.
- Bring the original passport and two recent pre-cut white-background photographs measuring 4.5 by 3.5 centimetres.
- Work applicants should align the Z or R visa and work-permit notification evidence with the booked route.
- Study applicants should align the X1 visa, admission notice and JW201 or JW202 evidence with the school and residence route.
- A Beijing overseas Physical Examination Record for Foreigner must normally be issued within six months and supported by original reports.
- Missing authentication, missing items or unclear results can trigger supplemental testing; an invalid form can require a complete new examination.
- The center publishes itemised fees but no single universal foreigner-examination total.
- Normal collection is after the fourth working day by voucher or arranged courier, subject to unresolved verification or follow-up.
- For the cited Beijing permit filings, the relevant health or verification certificate must have been issued within the preceding six months.
- A pre-entry employer health commitment is not the final work-permit health certificate.
- Share the certificate and health information only with the personnel and authority that need it for the identified process.
Identify the Beijing application before booking
Write down the receiving authority, application name, planned submission date and applicant category. A Foreigner's Work Permit notification before entry, the work permit after entry, an employment residence permit, a first student residence permit and permanent residence do not use one interchangeable checklist. The center examines or verifies health records; it does not decide whether the work-permit authority, school or public-security office requires the resulting certificate.
The center's inbound page describes applicants settling in China or taking up a post, employment or study for one year or more. Beijing's employment-residence guide is narrower: it identifies applicants aged 18 to 70 seeking a permit valid for more than one year. The student-residence guide identifies a foreign citizen aged 18 or older making a first study-residence application. Use the more specific receiving-process rule and ask that office when duration, age, an existing certificate or an unusual visa category makes the answer unclear.
Do not book a routine hospital check-up and assume it will produce the inspection-and-quarantine certificate required by a Beijing permit route.
Use the current Beijing appointment channel
The center directs applicants to follow the WeChat service account 海关总署国际旅行卫生保健中心, register and choose the business-processing function, or use the Beijing center website. A successful reservation produces an appointment SMS. Attend at the agreed time with that message; the center says an overdue appointment is invalid and must be booked again. Save a screenshot that shows the business type, location, date and applicant identity, but do not post it publicly.
A notice dated 30 June 2026 says the website is under upgrade during July and August and may be unavailable outside working hours. This is an operational interruption, not a suspension of immigration deadlines. If the site fails, try during working hours, use the official WeChat route or call the center rather than paying an unverified agent for a supposed priority slot. Hepingli entry-examination contacts are 010-64274239 and 010-82003383; Haidian's number is 010-82403675.
Choose Hepingli or Haidian from the confirmed booking
Hepingli headquarters is at 20 Hepingli North Street, Dongcheng District. For foreign-national entry examinations, the published on-site number time is 7:30 to 10:30 and processing runs from 7:30 to 11:00 on statutory working days. The inbound route is on the first floor. Do not confuse it with designated visa examinations for the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand or South Korea, which use separate appointment categories and instructions.
The Haidian outpatient department is at 10 Dezheng Road, Xibeiwang, Haidian District, entered from the west gate on Xibeiwang Third Street. It publishes physical-examination hours of 8:30 to 11:00 and overseas-health-certificate verification hours of 8:30 to 11:00 and 13:00 to 16:00 on working days. A location shown on the center's contact page is not a walk-in guarantee; follow the site printed in the appointment confirmation.
Build the identity, photograph and route evidence pack
For the center intake, carry the original passport and two identical white-background small two-inch colour photographs taken within the preceding six months. The stated size is 4.5 by 3.5 centimetres, and the center asks applicants to cut them in advance. Keep spare copies of the passport information page, visa page and current entry page even where the published intake page asks only for the original, because the downstream employer, school or residence office may need separate copies.
For a work-residence route, the center asks applicants who have them to present the passport including the Z or R visa page and the Notification Letter of Foreigner's Work Permit, with one original and copy set of relevant supporting evidence. For a study-residence route, it identifies the X1 visa page, admission notice and JW201 or JW202 form. For another study situation, it accepts at least one of the published education-commission, admission, JW or passport-and-X-visa records. Use the spelling and passport number consistently across every document.
Prepare for the examination without changing necessary care
The Beijing center instructs applicants to fast for more than eight hours before the inbound examination while allowing a small amount of plain water. Wear separate upper and lower clothing. For chest imaging, the upper garment should be thin cotton without beads, buttons, embroidery, printed decorations or metal that affects the image; long hair should be tied back and neck jewellery removed. Applicants under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian.
Continue necessary long-term medicine such as prescribed antihypertensive treatment unless a responsible clinician tells you otherwise. The center advises postponing during fever or acute illness where appropriate. A pregnant applicant should bring pregnancy examination evidence or records and disclose pregnancy at reception before imaging. Do not stop medicine, conceal pregnancy or override a clinician's advice to fit an administrative appointment. Call the center in advance when a disability, pregnancy, acute illness or other condition changes the ordinary route.
Use Beijing's detailed overseas-record verification route
For verification, bring the appointment SMS, original passport and two specified photographs. The Physical Examination Record for Foreigner should be completed in Chinese or English and clearly dated within the preceding six months. It should include the applicant's photograph bearing the hospital seal, the final examination conclusion, the physician's signature and the hospital seal matching the seal across the photograph. A summary letter without the standardized fields is not automatically equivalent.
Attach the original supporting material for the listed examination content: an X-ray report or film, an ECG tracing or report, laboratory reports including at least HIV and syphilis testing, and an ultrasound report. Preserve original envelopes and do not laminate, crop, retouch or overwrite the form. Make scans for your records, but take the originals to the center. A translation can support review, yet it does not cure a missing test, signature, seal, conclusion or original report.
Expect supplementation when the overseas file is incomplete
The center says the examination and report should be completed by an overseas public hospital. If performed by a private hospital or clinic, its page says the report should first be notarised in the issuing place. Where the report content requires Chinese embassy or consulate authentication, the applicant should show the authentication evidence or label. Since China began using the Apostille Convention in 2023, the correct formalisation path now depends on the issuing country and document type; confirm the current requirement with the center and the responsible Chinese mission rather than relying on an old double-legalisation checklist.
If authentication evidence is absent, the form has missing items, original reports are absent or an item is unclear, the on-site physician may order the corresponding supplemental examination. If the submitted standardized form is invalid, the center says a new health examination is required. This is why overseas verification is not simply document drop-off. Budget time and money for additions and do not promise an employer or school that every overseas report will be accepted unchanged.
Treat Apostille and medical acceptance as separate tests
An apostille or consular legalisation addresses the authenticity of the relevant public-document signature, capacity or seal. It does not establish that the hospital is the type accepted by the center, that the examination was completed within six months, that every required test is present or that the medical conclusion is sufficient. Conversely, a clinically complete report may still need the document formalisation that the center requests for its country and issuing institution.
Before paying for authentication, send only the minimum non-sensitive description needed to the center or embassy: issuing country, public or private institution, document name, date and proposed use. Ask whether the document is eligible for apostille, needs notarisation or consular legalisation, and whether the center still requires originals. Avoid emailing full HIV, syphilis or imaging results merely to ask a procedural question unless the verified recipient specifically requests them through an approved channel.
Budget from the itemised Beijing fee directory
The center publishes an itemised service directory rather than one universal package price. Current examples on the live page include a 10-yuan health-record filing fee, a 20-yuan general physical-examination fee and a 55-yuan chest radiography item, with ECG, ultrasound, laboratory collection and other services priced separately. These examples are not a total and should not be added into a quote because the center determines the applicable set and any supplemental verification items.
The inbound notice accepts WeChat, Alipay, UnionPay card and cash. Electronic invoices can be retrieved through the WeChat service account's medical-invoice function. Ask for the itemised receipt and preserve it with the appointment, collection voucher and any supplemental-test notice. Do not publish an agent's bundle, an old blog total or another country's designated-visa medical fee as the Beijing work, study or residence examination price.
Collect and check the Beijing certificate
The center's normal rule is collection after the fourth working day from processing, during working-day afternoons from 13:00 to 16:00. For in-person collection, bring the collection voucher. If it is lost, the center asks for the examinee's original identity document and a copy. Courier service can be arranged on site, with the certificate scheduled for delivery four working days after processing. An expedited request may be explained at the registration desk, but approval and timing are not guaranteed.
Before leaving the collection counter, compare the certificate with the passport: full name order and spelling, nationality, date of birth, sex marker where shown, passport number, examination date, issue date and certificate type. Do not hand-correct, erase or overwrite an official certificate. If an administrative field is wrong, contact the issuing center immediately with the original passport, certificate, voucher and receipt and ask for its controlled correction or reissue route. The public pages do not promise a remote self-service correction.
Route the certificate through the Beijing work-permit stages
For the pre-entry Notification Letter of Foreigner's Work Permit, the cited Beijing guide accepts a Chinese inspection-and-quarantine verification certificate or health certificate, or an overseas medical report accepted by the inspection-and-quarantine system, issued within six months. Where the report cannot be provided, the employer may use a health-commitment letter at that stage. Keep a copy of exactly what the employer uploaded and the application reference.
After entry, the same guide requires the Chinese verification certificate or health certificate when applying for the Foreigner's Work Permit. A commitment is therefore a temporary document route, not a waiver. Check the final certificate's issue date against the planned submission date and allow the fourth-working-day collection period plus possible supplementation. The employer controls the work-permit filing, while the applicant controls truthful health information and should receive a copy of the submitted certificate and filing confirmation.
Avoid duplicate submission in the employment residence route
Beijing's employment-residence guide says applicants aged 18 to 70 seeking a permit valid for more than one year provide a verification certificate issued within six months. It also states that a person who already submitted that certificate to the Beijing Overseas Talents Center for the work-permit application need not resubmit it to exit-entry administration. Ask the employer or service center to confirm whether the specific certificate is visible in the linked case rather than assuming a scan in an HR folder counts as official submission.
The residence application still has its own passport, visa, accommodation registration, application form, photograph, work-permit evidence and employer letter. The no-resubmission rule concerns one health document; it does not merge the work-permit and residence decisions. If the certificate will be older than six months, the permit duration is different or the record cannot be located, obtain an answer from the receiving office before relying on the exception.
Keep the school and public-authority roles separate
For a first study-residence application, Beijing's city guide identifies the original Chinese quarantine health certificate for a foreign student aged 18 or older. The school supplies or endorses different materials, such as the admission notice, JW201 or JW202 form, study-duration letter and visa or residence application. Beijing Language and Culture University's page illustrates this division and says X1 students apply for residence permission within 30 days of entry.
A university may collect documents, schedule a group visit or issue an introduction letter, but it does not turn its campus clinic examination into the Beijing Customs certificate and does not make the final verification or residence decision. Ask the school whether it needs the certificate itself, a copy or only confirmation for its file. Unless the official workflow requires otherwise, do not give a department or dormitory the complete laboratory and imaging file when the purpose can be met by the issued certificate.
Handle re-examination, delay and correction as controlled workflows
For an overseas file, supplementation is item-specific where possible; a completely invalid standardized record can require a new examination. Follow the center's written or on-site instruction and preserve the requested item, appointment, payment and completion evidence. The advertised fourth-working-day collection is a normal service target, not a promise where a test remains incomplete or a physician requests clarification. Tell the employer or school the factual status without disclosing unrelated diagnoses.
For a spelling, passport-number or other administrative error, contact the issuing center rather than editing the certificate or asking the employer or school to edit it. If the passport has been replaced, keep both passport identity pages, the replacement evidence and the certificate, then ask both the center and receiving authority whether linkage, re-verification or reissue is required. A corrected health certificate does not automatically update the work-permit or residence-permit record; each system controls its own identity change.
Protect the health file while proving the administrative fact
The certificate, HIV and syphilis laboratory records, imaging and passport copies contain sensitive identity and health information. Use the official center, government, employer or school channel named for the case. Confirm the recipient, purpose, required pages, retention period and whether a certificate alone is sufficient. Watermark administrative copies where the receiving system permits it, record when and to whom each copy was sent and avoid shared chat groups or personal cloud links.
Employers and schools should limit access to staff handling the identified permit or enrollment task. A work-permit need does not give a line manager, teacher or dormitory unrestricted access to the complete medical file. If a courier is used, verify the address and named recipient at the center. Store the original securely, retain a legible scan and avoid public discussion of an abnormal result. The Personal Information Protection Law supplies the minimum-necessary and sensitive-information boundary; the responsible authority still decides the lawful document set.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Where do foreigners get the official health exam in Beijing?
The primary Beijing route in this guide is the General Administration of Customs (Beijing) International Travel Health Care Center. Its foreign-national inbound services operate at Hepingli headquarters and the Haidian outpatient department according to the booked business type. Do not substitute a routine hospital health package unless the work-permit, school or public-security authority expressly confirms acceptance of that route.
How do I book during the Beijing website upgrade?
The center accepts booking through its website or the WeChat service account 海关总署国际旅行卫生保健中心. A 30 June 2026 notice says the site may be unavailable outside working hours during July and August. Retry during working hours or use the official WeChat and telephone contacts. A message to an agent or an unconfirmed calendar entry is not an appointment; keep the successful center SMS.
What photographs are required for the Beijing inbound exam?
The center's current checklist asks for two white-background small two-inch colour photographs taken within the last six months, measuring 4.5 by 3.5 centimetres and pre-cut. This is the center intake requirement. The later residence-permit application may have a separate photograph specification, so do not assume the same two prints cover both processes.
Can Beijing verify a health exam completed overseas?
Yes, subject to center review. The standardized form should be in Chinese or English, issued within six months, contain the sealed photograph, conclusion, physician signature and matching hospital seal, and be accompanied by original X-ray, ECG, laboratory and ultrasound material. The center may order supplemental tests where authentication, items or originals are missing or unclear, and an invalid form can require a new examination.
Does an apostille guarantee Beijing will accept my overseas medical report?
No. An apostille concerns the authenticity of a qualifying public-document signature or seal. Beijing's center separately reviews the issuing institution, date, standardized form, examination items, originals and medical conclusion. A private medical record may require notarisation or another formalisation route, and the center may still request supplemental testing. Confirm the issuing-country path before paying for document services.
How much does the Beijing foreigner health examination cost?
The official center publishes an itemised service directory, not one universal total. The payable amount depends on the examination set and any supplemental verification items. Pay through the methods stated by the center and retain the itemised invoice. Do not use a visa-medical price, an agent bundle or a sum created from selected directory entries as the official work, study or residence examination price.
When can I collect the Beijing health certificate?
The current inbound page states after the fourth working day, with in-person collection on working-day afternoons from 13:00 to 16:00 using the voucher. Courier can be arranged on site. Missing verification items, supplemental examination or another unresolved issue can extend the practical timeline. Check the identity fields immediately and ask the issuing center to correct any error rather than altering the certificate.
Can my employer use a health commitment instead of the certificate?
Only at the applicable pre-entry work-permit notification stage described by Beijing's guide. After entry, the work-permit application requires the Chinese inspection-and-quarantine verification certificate or health certificate. The commitment does not make an overseas report acceptable, does not satisfy the later residence route automatically and does not extend the six-month validity of the final certificate.
Must I submit the certificate again for a Beijing work residence permit?
Beijing's employment-residence guide says an applicant who already submitted the verification certificate to the Beijing Overseas Talents Center during the work-permit process does not resubmit it to exit-entry administration. Confirm that the certificate is actually attached to the official case and still fits the age, permit-duration and six-month conditions. A copy in an employer's private folder is not proof of authority-side submission.
Can my university issue the official Beijing health certificate?
No. The university supplies school-side documents and may coordinate the process, but the Beijing International Travel Health Care Center issues or verifies the health certificate and public-security exit-entry administration decides the residence application. A campus health service may provide ordinary care or a school check, yet that is not automatically the inspection-and-quarantine certificate.
